Disclaimer: I do not own Amazingphil or danisnotonfire and this is fictional.
A/N: So. This is kind of a cliché happy ending, but it's not as happy as it could be, SO. I hope you all enjoyed this little series <3 c: I know I loved writing it and reading your feedback.
Phil grinned lazily, pressing a quick little kiss to the top of Dan's head. The couple was at Phil's, cuddling on the old sofa in the lounge. They were half-watching some really crappy movie that was playing on one of the upper channels, but their main focus was on the snuggling.
The previous day had been their one month anniversary and they still hadn't stopped celebrating. At first, like they expected, they had to deal with a lot of strange looks and whispering from kids at school, but the pair quickly learned to just brush it off. For all they knew, those people could be jealous or something.
“You still awake?” Phil teased, running his fingers through Dan's soft locks, pulling the brunette even closer to himself. They were a bit squished, what with trying to fit on the relatively small sofa, but sometimes being squished was nice.
Dan nodded, biting his lip as he wriggled a bit, truly loving the feeling of Phil's arms around him. He was lost in though, which probably made him seem a bit spacey.
Lately, Dan had been doing that often. Thinking hard about something and completely zoning out for a bit. There had really only been one thought plaguing his mind, but that thought was enough to make his head spin.
Dan suddenly had urges to talk. Like, physically speak and say things.
Before Phil came along, Dan had always told himself that he didn't need to talk. It didn't really seem necessary after Zak was gone. Who wanted to talk to him, anyway?
Now, though..... Now he had a reason. Phil would want to talk to him. Phil would listen to him if he talked.
It wasn't like Dan wanted to start spewing poetry or reciting Shakespeare or anything. He just wanted to say something. He wanted to thank Phil.... He needed to thank Phil.
“Hey.....” Phil frowned, noticing the way Dan had started trembling out of nowhere. All of those seemingly impossible desires were putting way too much strain on Dan's emotions and he had to let it all out somehow. Crying was the easiest option. “What's wrong, love? You okay? You need to.... uh, talk?”
Dan could only nod, marveling at the irony of Phil's simple question as he turned his body in order to bury his face in Phil's chest. All of these feelings were so confusing and conflicting..... He needed to calm down if he wanted to have any hope in sorting it all out.
A bit afraid, Phil cocooned his arms around Dan tightly, wanting to somehow cuddle it all away. Whatever was bothering Dan would subsequently become his problem as well, but he wasn't going to push the issue if Dan wasn't ready.
“Oh.... Oh, love, it's okay.... It's okay, Dan. Whatever it is, it'll be okay....”
Opening and closing his mouth over and over, Dan let out a small, sad noise. He was sure he wouldn't be able to talk even if he could force himself to try. He could barely remember how to form words.... His throat would be so dry and whatever voice he managed to have would surely be raspy. He'd probably sound like a total idiot, but it was one of those risks that seemed worth it in the end.
After a few minutes of crying out all of his nervousness and trying to remember how to make the sounds of letters, Dan pulled away, blinking at his boyfriend with red-rimmed eyes, tears still streaming down his face.
He had to try. He'd never forgive himself if he didn't five it a shot and he knew that. There was no choice anymore. He had to do it.
“T-th-th.... Ack-..... Than-k..... y-oo-.... P-Phil....”
Phil's eyes widened, his jaw dropping. Before he could really comprehend what was happening, he was making some sort of very girlish squealing noise and clinging to Dan, happy tears leaking out of his eyes.
Dan had spoken.
Dan talked and Dan had thanked him.
And Dan. Had. SPOKEN.
“Oh, Dan! Dan, you did it!” Phil practically screamed, pressing kisses all over Dan's face, “I always knew you could do it! I knew it! You did it! Dan, you talked!”
Dan nodded, feeling himself start to tear up once again as well, a tiny smile making his entire face light up. Somehow, some way.... He had done it.
Sure, he sounded like a dying walrus on a stick, but he'd done it!
“L-.... Love you.....” the brunette murmured, his dark eyes so serious that Phil broke down once more, crying even harder than he had before.
“Oh my God, I love you, too!” Phil sobbed loudly, cradling Dan to his chest and squeezing the other boy. Part of him was afraid this was all a dream. Just a twisted version of reality that his mind had created while he slept.
But when Dan wiggled up a bit and Phil felt a familiar pressure on his lips, he knew it was real. As real as anything.
As real as the love he felt for Dan.
They spent the rest of their time together kissing and holding each other, Phil trying to get Dan to say more things and Dan giving his boyfriend pained looks, sticking his tongue out as he stuttered out responses to everything Phil asked. He wasn't exactly used to this speaking thing yet. He was kind of scared that he'd never get used to it again, but that was okay. Phil understood.
Even though Dan's silence was what had brought them together, Phil was absolutely thrilled about this. Dan's silence allowed him to see the person hiding behind the label. Dan was 'mute', sure, but he was also just Dan. Sweet, smart, silly, funny, cute, lazy, cuddly, wonderful Dan.
Deep down, Phil knew things probably wouldn't have gone the way they had if Dan had been talking from the beginning. He just knew.
Sometimes silence is the loudest form of communication. Silence can be completely deafening. Silence can be a call for help.
As for Dan, his silence was his way of warning others that he wasn't okay. He wasn't healing and he was sure he never would. When Phil came along, though.... His silence didn't need to protect him anymore.
Phil would protect him from now on. The silence wasn't necessary anymore, and that was the best thing ever, as far as Dan was concerned.
